Getting around and living well in Cologne
Once you’re housed, Cologne is generous: a flat city for bikes, KVB Stadtbahn and buses, Kölsch in a Brauhaus, and a semester ticket that turns Bonn and Düsseldorf into regular hops.

- Activate the semester ticket after enrolment (carry photo ID with it). It covers KVB trams and buses plus a wide NRW net — Bonn ~20 minutes, Düsseldorf ~30, without extra fares.
- Learn the Brauhaus move: Kölsch keeps arriving in small glasses until you park the coaster on top. Carry some cash — many Brauhäuser and Büdchen still prefer it.
- Join ESN Cologne for welcome parties, tandems, and trips. If you’re here in February, buy a costume early, learn Kölle Alaaf, and expect the city to pause for Karneval week.
- Eat cheap: Mensa lunches, Halve Hahn (a rye roll with cheese, not chicken), Reibekuchen, and Ehrenfeld’s Turkish and Mediterranean strips. Walk the Hohenzollernbrücke for the cathedral view from Deutz.
